PASSPORT AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
It is your responsibility to obtain the necessary documents for traveling to Italy, depending on your country of residence.
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the end of your tour to enter Italy. Currently, no vaccinations are required, but it is your responsibility to stay informed about any changes to this requirement.
For citizens of other non-European countries traveling internationally, it is advisable to contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine the required travel documentation.
MOBILITY AND HEALTH
To enjoy our Grand Tour of Tuscany, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances. This is not a physically demanding tour, however, there will be a lot of walking, often on uneven steps, cobblestones, uphill and downhill. One of the charming aspects of Italy is its historical and architectural conformation. Many towns and attractions can only be visited on foot, as vans and buses cannot access the pedestrian areas where most places of interest are located.
While the driving time on our tours is limited, getting to remote farmhouses and villages may require driving on windy roads that may cause motion sickness.
WHEELCHAIRS
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Our tour managers and tour guides are unable to provide ongoing individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other physical needs.
HOTELS, WI-FI, AIR CONDITIONING
Due to the historic nature of many luxury boutique hotels we stay in, some rooms may have stairs and can vary in size and layout. Additionally, air conditioning in Italy, as well as the Wi-Fi connection, may not be as reliable as it is in the United States.
GRATUITIES and OTHER THINGS TO KNOW
Gratuities for hotel staff and waiters are included in the tour price. Guests may choose to leave a tip for drivers and guides as a token of appreciation for their services. Suggested tipping amounts will be communicated approximately a month before departure via email, along with a list of important information about Italy, including what to pack, how to manage money withdrawals, electricity usage, VAT refunds, and more.

Day 5 – The Mosaics School in Spilimbergo, San Daniele Prosciutto & Udine
Meals included: breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Friuli’s wine region, near Udine
Our captivating Dolomites & Friuli Small Group Tour today focuses on the western side of the region along the Tagliamento River. This journey celebrates the art of slow travel and reveals some of Italy’s best-kept secrets.
Our adventure begins in the medieval town of Spilimbergo, home to the world’s most prestigious mosaic school. Here, you will discover how its talented graduates have created breathtaking works for iconic places such as the Paris Opéra Garnier, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the Ground Zero subway station in New York City.
Learning about the use of the martellina (traditional hammer) to hand-cut stones, you’ll gain insights into the craft’s evolution—from replicas of Roman works to cutting-edge contemporary designs. This experience promises to be much more than history; it will awaken your senses and leave you inspired.
Next, we’ll take a short drive to the quaint town of San Daniele, renowned for Italy’s most tender and sweet prosciutto. You’ll visit an artisanal producer that cures hams by the gentle breeze of the Tagliamento River valley. Enjoy a delightful lunch at their restaurant (vegetarian options available).
After some time relaxing at the hotel, we’ll head to Udine in the late afternoon. As Friuli’s second-largest city, Udine offers a unique blend of Venetian charm and vibrant life, thanks to its youthful university population. We stroll through picturesque piazzas, enjoy some free time to wander through independent shops nestled between stunning Venetian-influenced architecture.
Our knowledgeable tour manager will guide you to charming osterias for sampling wines and Venetian tapas, as locals do, and to traditional restaurants for dinner at your leisure.
After a delightful evening, we’ll return to the hotel, leaving you with unforgettable memories of this remarkable journey.
Day 6 – Northeast Italy World War I Itinerary: The Golden Wines of Oslavia & The Slovenian Border
Meals included: breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Trieste
Prepare yourself for a profound journey as we head east toward the Slovenian border, where the rolling Collio hills cradle the storied village of Oslavia.
This landscape carries a heavy silence; once the front line of the Great War, Oslavia was entirely leveled by shelling, leaving only a landscape of craters and memories. Today, that very soil—a unique, flaky marl known as ponca—has been reclaimed by visionary winemakers who have turned tragedy into a liquid masterpiece.
We will visit an intimate, family-owned estate to uncover the secrets of their world-renowned “Orange Wines.” Here, the local Ribolla Gialla grape is treated with ancient reverence; rather than being pressed immediately, the skins are left to macerate for weeks or even months.
This patient process yields a wine of astonishing amber hue and complex flavor. As you swirl your glass, you’ll hear the family’s narrative of survival and their radical dedication to natural, skin-contact viticulture. It is a toast to the “vignaioli” who refused to let their heritage be buried by history.
After a meaningful surprise stop that bridges the past and present, we continue our adventure to the cosmopolitan Trieste. Luxury awaits at our historic Grand Hotel, positioned perfectly to capture the city’s imperial elegance.
Before dinner on your own, join our tour manager for an orientation around the city and a photo in Piazza Unità d’Italia, Europe’s largest sea-facing square. As it transforms under the glow of its nightly illumination, with the neoclassical palaces reflecting off the dark Adriatic waters. It is the perfect, captivating end to a day of deep discovery.
Day 7 – Trieste, the Great Synagogue and the Historic Coffee Houses
Meals included: breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Trieste
After a sumptuous breakfast served at the famous Harry’s, overlooking Piazza Unità d’Italia, our local expert meets us at our hotel for an exploration on foot of Trieste.
As the former main seaport of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste is lined with neoclassical palaces that whisper of a golden imperial age, although it always maintained its cultural independence.
The incredible clash of Greek, Jewish, Germanic, and Slavic influences that met in the city during the golden age left a treasure trove of hidden gems that our local guide will bring to life.
We visit the Great Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe, boasting Romanesque-Middle Eastern design, and dive into the city’s legendary coffee culture.
In historic “literary cafés” once frequented by James Joyce, we’ll learn the art of the master roasters famous for their “secret recipes” that balance the strengths of different beans. A guided tasting in one of the city’s iconic cafè awaits, as well as lunch.
For your free afternoon, you can book the hotel’s spa (not included), get lost in Trieste’s shopping streets, or follow our tour manager to the upper Castel San Giusto for views over the city and harbor from a higher vantage point.
Day 8 - Dolomites & Friuli Small Group Tour, from the Karst to the Miramare Castle
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Trieste
On the last day of exploring the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, we leave Trieste’s city center and drive to the surrounding hills, known as the Karst Plateau. Here, a limestone landscape has been modeled by subterranean rivers that carved out cathedral-like caves, and where the fierce Bora wind yields the rugged, stone-walled vineyards of the Vitovska grape.
We visit a small wine producer for a tour of their underground cellar and wine tasting paired with a selection of salami, cheese, and other local products.
In the early afternoon, we descend toward the sea and visit the iconic Miramare Castle. This shimmering white Istrian stone marvel is perched precariously over the turquoise Adriatic, surrounded by lush botanical gardens that offer the ultimate panoramic view of the gulf. We learn about the history and the love story within the castle’s walls before returning to Trieste.
It’s time to raise one more glass, this time to celebrate the end of the Dolomites & Friuli Small Group Tour, in a local restaurant, steps away from our hotel.
Day 9 – Arrivederci
Meals included: breakfast
Accommodation: n/a
After breakfast, check out and say goodbye to northeast Italy.
Please refer to the paragraph “Flights and Airport transfer” for more details on transfers to Trieste or Venice airports.

"Trip met all of our expectations. It was what I pictured plus so much more. Being a small group(only 7 people) allowed us to see some Tuscan towns that other tours don't plus all of the major attractions. The food, wine, hotels, tours and local guides were all A+. Marco was our tour manager and took care of all of the logistics, reservations and even provided a lot of the local tours. Marco was great and took care of everything. If you are looking for a great tour of Tuscany where everything is taken care for you and yet you still have plenty of your own time to do what you want then this tour is for you."

"This trip was everything I had hoped it would be. I traveled from the city to the lake, to the mountains, and to the Mediterranean. The tour was full of activities that were so much fun. The group walked and shopped, tasted chocolate, had a cooking class, ate at a Michelin star restaurant, swam in the sea. toasted one another with fabulous local wines, and much much more. If you want to get a great tour of these regions of Italy, this is the tour of tours! Book it now!!!!!! I have to applaud the trip leader, Marco Scaglione, for an outstanding job of being leader, tour guide, and friend. He was so professional and handled everything with ease, even when there was a "hiccup" and the weather didn't cooperate one day. He quickly found a replacement activity that was magnificent. I highly recommend Marco and Meet Piemonte."

"Traveling with Meet Piemonte on their small group tour of Sicily and Taormina was an absolutely delightful and enriching experience. One of the stand-out highlights in Sicily was our visit to a local olive farm. We learned firsthand about traditional olive oil production, walked among ancient groves, and sampled fresh oils paired with regional delicacies. The tour’s inclusion of several small, family-run wineries was a true treat for wine lovers. Exploring the salt pans was another unique highlight. In Palermo we enjoyed vibrant streets and shopping, fascinating architecture, and great street food. Our day trip to Farvignana island was a fascinating experience. The Meet Piemonte tour manager, Clarissa, was fantastic, and the guides on our excursions were outstanding. Transportation was comfortable, accommodations were fantastic, and every meal showcased Sicilian flavors. The balance of guided excursions and free time allowed us to explore independently while benefiting from expert recommendations. I highly recommend Meet Piemonte’s small group tours to anyone eager to experience Sicily, or any other Italian location."

"This is our second tour with Marco. Our first tour was northern Italy, and we thought nothing could compare. Well, our tour to the Amalfi Coast was just as spectacular. Everything including the hotel with private terraces overlooking the Mediterranean in Positano, the many private tours, the private boats to and around Capri, the cooking class and all the food were amazing. Marco is very accommodating; he always goes out of his way to ensure everyone is having the trip of a lifetime. Already thinking about where we want to go on our third tour with Meet Piemonte!"

Which Airlines offer Flights to Friuli Venezia Giulia airport?
Trieste Airport (TRS) is the primary gateway to Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is located within a 40-45 minute drive of the city center. Moreover, the airport is very small, allowing guests to complete check-in and security quickly, which helps travelers feel at ease and prepared for their journey.
For 2026, it is experiencing a significant increase in connectivity, especially through low-cost carriers and major European hubs. With ITA Airways flying to Trieste from Rome (FCO) and Milan Linate (LIN), and Lufthansa connecting the region to Frankfurt and Munich, international travelers can easily find connections to any other destination, including the US.
European travelers can also consider flying to Trieste from London and many other cities served by low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, making travel planning more straightforward and less stressful.
Meet Piemonte: from Piedmont to Northeast Italy
Meet Piemonte Tour Operator is the premier choice for exploring Northeast Italy because we don’t just book tours—we curate them from the ground up. As a boutique Italian incoming tour operator, we bypass the generic “big-bus” itineraries in favor of deep-rooted, personal relationships with the people who make the Dolomites & Friuli extraordinary.
- We reject commercial tourist traps, focusing instead on high-value, intimate encounters that reflect the true spirit of Friuli and the Dolomites.
- We leverage two decades of local partnerships to provide “behind-the-scenes” access, ensuring our guests meet the artisans and producers personally.
- Every hotel, restaurant, and winery is personally vetted by our founders to ensure it meets our strict standards for charm, quality, and hospitality.
- Our deep local knowledge allows us to navigate the complexities of mountain travel and border-region itineraries with effortless precision.
Italy’s Best-Kept Secrets in Friuli
We spend months in the field hand-selecting every partner from the family-run vineyards in Oslavia to the boutique luxurious hotels, to the local historians who bring the landscape to life.
By working exclusively with local suppliers who share our commitment to authenticity and “slow travel,” we gain access to off-the-beaten-path experiences—like private castle stays and hidden Karst osmize—that are simply inaccessible to larger companies. When you travel with us, you aren’t just a tourist; you are a guest of our extended local family.
What is the best time of year to visit the Dolomites and Friuli?
The best time to visit Friuli and the Dolomites depends on the atmosphere you desire. During the summer months of July and August, the high-altitude Dolomites offer endless sunny days and refreshing alpine air, ideal for exploring the jagged peaks and iconic mountain lakes. This season is also perfect for unwinding in Friuli’s Collio wine country, where you can relax by a pool overlooking the vineyards with a chilled glass of Friulano.
Conversely, an October visit reveals the region’s stunning autumn transformation. The golden larch forests blanket the alpine valleys in vibrant foliage, and the crisp weather enhances mountain views. Additionally, the autumn grape harvest brings lively cellar tastings, quiet village atmospheres, and an opportunity to enjoy peak seasonal gastronomy.
Collio Wine Region and Friuli White and Red Wines for Italian Food Pairings
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is Italy’s undisputed “White Wine Sanctuary,” but its diverse landscape produces equally compelling, soulful reds. For a quintessential pairing, look no further than the Friulano (formerly Tokai); its crisp acidity and signature bitter-almond finish are the perfect match for the salty, delicate slices of San Daniele Prosciutto. If you are venturing into the region’s robust reds, the Schioppettino—with its distinct cracked-black-pepper aroma—is a revelation alongside local spezzatino (stew) or fatty pork dishes. For the adventurous palate, the mineral-rich Vitovska from the Karst plateau offers a saline edge that sings when paired with fresh Adriatic seafood or lagoon-caught fish.
On our Dolomites & Friuli Small Group Tour, we visit the three most important wine regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia:
- The Collio: Sunny, rolling hills on the Slovenian border, home to elegant Ribolla Gialla and complex “Orange” skin-contact wines.
- Colli Orientali del Friuli: A UNESCO-adjacent territory famous for both world-class whites, such as Pinot Grigio, and rare indigenous reds like Pignolo and Refosco.
- The Carso (Karst Plateau): A dramatic limestone plateau where vines struggle against the Bora wind, producing wines with incredible minerality and tension.
In Friuli, as in many other Italian regions, there are wine producers known for sustainable practices. Across the Collio and Karst hills, a growing movement of conscientious growers is moving “back to the future.” Many top-rated producers included in our Dolomites & Friuli tour embrace organic and biodynamic viticulture, avoiding chemical pesticides in favor of cover crops and natural predator insects to maintain a balanced ecosystem. We will visit wineries dedicated to monitoring water usage and carbon footprints. In the cellar, several pioneers have returned to ancient techniques—using terracotta amphorae and spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts—ensuring that every bottle is a pure, chemical-free expression of the Friulian earth.
Slow Travel in the Dolomites and Friuli, Italy’s Ultimate Hidden Path
Northeast Italy is one of Italy’s least-known regions, yet it is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, often overshadowed by nearby Venice. Our focus on authentic regions away from tourist crowds makes northeast Italy an ideal destination.
Luxury small group tour to Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Dolomites
The jagged, pale peaks of the Dolomites meet the rolling vineyards and Adriatic breezes of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Our Dolomites & Friuli Small Group Tour, brings to life this remarkable geographical blend, starting from the allure of the Dolomites. Part of the Alps and as a UNESCO World Heritage site, these mountains exhibit a majestic beauty that humbles the soul. Notable sights like Lake Misurina and the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo—three striking, battlement-like peaks—are must-sees that we access effortlessly with a small vehicle, reaching the Auronzo Mountain Hut.
As we journey toward the Friulian Alps, specifically the Carnic district, guests will find a wilder and more remote mountain range. Here, the dramatic views are a great source of inspiration and relaxation, as one admires the pine forests and listens to the rhythmic chime of cowbells in Alpine meadows. Time feels suspended, measured by the shadows on rock faces rather than a tour operator’s stopwatch. In one of the lower alpine valleys of the Carnic Alps lies Pesariis, a charming stone village with steep roofs and wooden beams, home to 15 monumental clocks that turn a stroll through town into a delightful treasure hunt.
Authentic Northeast Italy slow travel tour
As the mountains give way to the hills of Friuli, the focus shifts from nature to a rich, multi-layered human history. This region represents a “Triple Point” of Europe. At these unique crossroads, Latin, Germanic, and Slavic cultures have collided and coexisted for centuries, creating a land of extraordinary contrasts. In a single day, one can wander through Udine and its Venetian-looking palaces, marvel at the Romanesque-Lombard treasures of Cividale, and finish with a glass of “Orange wine” in the Collio, where winemaking techniques date back to ancient times.
Spilimbergo is a less-visited town where we specifically visit the International School of Mosaics, renowned for producing contemporary works of art shipped worldwide. Most tourists often overlook this experience, yet it leaves a lasting impression.
What is the Historical Significance of Trieste in Italy?
The highlight of our cultural immersion is Trieste, a city that defies typical Italian stereotypes. Once the great seaport of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste combines a Viennese soul with a Mediterranean embrace, but it was never influenced by Venice. Our exploration of this “City of Coffee” transcends the grand palaces of Piazza Unità d’Italia. We delve into the city’s hidden gems—historic literary cafés where James Joyce once wrote, unraveling more architectural and cultural stories.
A central aspect of the Trieste experience is a deep dive into its Jewish heritage. For centuries, Trieste has been home to a thriving community of intellectuals and writers, as well as businessmen, merchants, and insurers, who have shaped the city’s cosmopolitan heartbeat.
A private visit to the Great Synagogue of Trieste, one of the largest in Europe, offers a chance to see its soaring dome, golden mosaics, and a deeper understanding of Trieste’s triumph and tragedy, often overlooked by generic tours.
Ultimately, pairing the Dolomites with Friuli is about embracing the luxury of the unexpected. It represents a transition from the high-altitude “zero-mile” gastronomy of an Alpine mountain hut to the sophisticated infused flavors found in the Collio wine region and in the capital city of Trieste.
Following on the same style of all our other small group tours to Italy, the Dolomites & Friuli journey is designed for travelers who recognize that the “real” Italy is not listed in a guidebook’s Top 10; it’s found in local people who open their doors to us, who share their passion and commitment to tradition whether their job is making wine, balsamic vinegar, cooking or tell the stories of the past.
