PASSPORT AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
It is your responsibility to obtain the necessary documents for traveling to Italy, depending on your country of residence.
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the end of your tour to enter Italy. Currently, no vaccinations are required, but it is your responsibility to stay informed about any changes to this requirement.
For citizens of other non-European countries traveling internationally, it is advisable to contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine the required travel documentation.
MOBILITY AND HEALTH
To enjoy our Food & Wine Tour in Piedmont, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances. This is not a physically demanding tour, however, there will be a lot of walking, often on uneven steps, cobblestones, uphill and downhill. One of the charming aspects of Italy is its historical and architectural conformation. Many towns and attractions can only be visited on foot, as vans and buses cannot access the pedestrian areas where most places of interest are located.
While the driving time on our tours is limited, getting to remote farmhouses and villages may require driving on windy roads that may cause motion sickness.
WHEELCHAIRS
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Our tour managers and tour guides are unable to provide ongoing individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other physical needs.
HOTELS, WI-FI, AIR CONDITIONING
Due to the historic nature of many luxury boutique hotels we stay in, some rooms may have stairs and can vary in size and layout. Additionally, air conditioning in Italy, as well as the Wi-Fi connection, may not be as reliable as it is in the United States.
GRATUITIES and OTHER THINGS TO KNOW
Gratuities for hotel staff and waiters are included in the tour price. Guests may choose to leave a tip for drivers and guides as a token of appreciation for their services. Suggested tipping amounts will be communicated approximately a month before departure via email, along with a list of important information about Italy, including what to pack, how to manage money withdrawals, electricity usage, VAT refunds, and more.

6-Day Culinary Itinerary (Milan to Turin)
Day 1 – Welcome to the Food and Wine Tour in Piedmont
Meals included: dinner
Accommodation: in the wine region
Join us for an unforgettable Food and Wine Tour in Piedmont through the stunning Langhe and Monferrato Hills! Today at 2 PM, meet our friendly guide and driver in central Milan, just a short walk from the Central train station. Prepare for an amazing journey filled with delightful flavors and breathtaking views!
Refer to the Flights, Transfers & On-Tour Luggage section below for additional details. If you’re flying in from abroad, we highly recommend arriving in Milan the day before to minimize the risk of airline delays and give yourself some time to adjust to jet lag.
In less than two hours, you will traverse the plains of the Po River and arrive in southern Piedmont, near the towns of Asti and Alba, where you will stay for the next four nights.
Arriving at our Countryside Retreat in Piedmont
Set against the beautiful backdrops of the Langhe and Monferrato wine regions, the hotel boasts breathtaking views of vineyards and undulating hills. Relax in country-chic rooms that blend traditional and modern designs, or indulge in a spa treatment and unwind by the outdoor pool with a good book.
The hotel embodies the tranquil essence of Piedmont’s wine region, making it an ideal base for exploring the area.
This evening, we will savor the exquisite cuisine of Piedmont at a local restaurant in the nearby town of Calosso, perched on a hill of the Monferrato area. Known as trattorias or osterias, these laid-back eateries emphasize traditional dishes that highlight the finest regional ingredients. A four-course menu complemented by local wines is included.
Day 2 – Truffle Lunch with the Hunter, Barolo Winery, and Dinner in Alba
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and wine tasting
Accommodation: in the wine region
Imagine starting your day with a leisurely morning that flows effortlessly into a late breakfast. After a relaxing break, we gather for an unforgettable adventure in the woods near Alba.
The first part of the day focuses on truffles and includes a truffle-hunting excursion, a must for adventurous food lovers.
As one of the iconic ingredients of Piedmont’s cuisine, the truffle of Alba is known as the “diamond of the kitchen” and adds a unique, earthy flavor to many traditional fat-based dishes like fried eggs, cheese fondue, creamy risotto, and more. A symphony of flavors that will leave you craving for more.
If the aroma of truffles is unique, even more so is the hunt to unearth them, as truffles cannot be cultivated. Accompanied by a truffle hunter and their trusty dog, we venture into the forests near Alba in search of these elusive treasures. Experience the thrill of seeing the dog in action and learn about the age-old techniques for finding these precious fungi. Only black truffles are available from April through September, while white truffles are in season from October through January.
At lunch, savor the warmth and charm of the hunter’s farmhouse as you enjoy a homemade meal in a rustic yet inviting setting. Indulge in a selection of delicious appetizers and starters, egg pasta dressed in melted butter, and the classic fried egg, all elegantly finished with freshly shaved black truffles.
Exploring Piedmont’s Barolo Wine Region and Vineyards
The afternoon continues with a panoramic drive through some of the eleven municipalities where the Barolo Wine is produced.
The Food and Wine Tour in Piedmont takes you to the idyllic Langhe Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll be in awe of the landscape’s beauty.
As you venture into the vineyards, you’ll be greeted by endless rows of grapevines, gently swaying in the breeze, and breathtaking panoramic views of the rolling hills.
We partake in an exclusive wine tasting led by a passionate winemaker eager to share his knowledge and expertise. Learn about the winemaking process, from grape to bottle, and sample a variety of wines, including some exclusive single-vineyard Barolo. Each hillside has unique characteristics, influenced by the region’s terroir, making every sip a delight for the palate.
Alba, Piedmont’s Food and Wine Capital
We end our day in the town of Alba for a leisurely, informal walk through the Roman-founded streets. We step inside the Cathedral for a closer look at the wooden inlaid choir and discover the original exterior frames and other details of shops and private doorways.
Home of Nutella—invented here decades ago and still produced in the first and oldest Ferrero factory—Alba surprises with its elegant shopping streets dotted with truffle shops.
Have some time to explore on your own, shop, and enjoy dinner at your own pace, while the guide is available to assist you.
Day 3 – Chocolate, Cheese and Cooking Class
Meals included: breakfast, chocolate tasting, cheese tasting, and dinner
Accommodation: in the wine region
After breakfast, a short drive takes us to Asti, where you’ll explore an acclaimed chocolate and nougat producer. Uncover the art of blending premium ingredients like cocoa beans and vanilla as you tour the production premises. Marvel at the traditional techniques and vintage tools showcased in the family’s museum, preserving a rich heritage.
Your experience culminates in a delightful tasting of exquisite local thin chocolate-coated breadsticks, mouth-watering pralines, and rich nougat crafted from local hazelnuts, all perfectly paired with a glass of refreshing Moscato wine. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to indulge in true artisanal craftsmanship!
Next, we visit the farmhouse of a devoted cheese refiner. This isn’t just any dairy farm; it embodies an ancient art form brought from France.
Piedmont offers a wealth of unique culinary experiences that go beyond the usual restaurant offerings. The cheese refiner experience allows you to delve into the local culture by meeting an artisan committed to preserving the region’s culinary traditions. Enjoy a guided tour of his aging cellar and discover the complex process of enhancing the texture and flavor of cheeses by managing temperature, molds, and other external factors.
Learn more about cheese refining on our blog.
Piedmont’s famous cheeses, such as the creamy Robiola, the pungent Castelmagno, and many others, will be introduced in a guided tasting paired with jams, honey, and a glass of wine.
Cooking Class with Piedmont’s Food and Wine
In the late afternoon, gather in the private kitchen of a local host for a friendly, engaging, and informative hands-on cooking class focused on Piedmont’s traditional recipes.
As you become familiar with pasta making, baking desserts, braising meats, and handling fresh vegetables, you’ll also learn about the historical roots of the recipes and take home a lasting memory of your trip to Italy.
From antipasti to thin egg pasta, from slowly cooked meats to succulent chocolate- and hazelnut-based desserts, the cooking class takes place near Alba, home to one of Italy’s most refined cuisines.
Tonight, sit at the table and taste the results of your hard work, topped with the local wines coming from the host family’s winery.
Day 4 – Farmer’s Lunch in a Winery and Michelin-Star Dinner
Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: in the wine region
Today, we meet a local family who welcomes us into their winery located in the Asti wine region. Historically, Asti was known mainly for its sweet and sparkling wines. Still, in the last decade, this area has risen in prominence in international wine reviews, spotlighting the full-bodied Barbera d’Asti, which is aged in oak.
A comprehensive introduction to the local food and wine awaits you, sparking new interest in the Barbera grape and its aging potential akin to Nebbiolo. Enjoy a traditional farmer’s lunch featuring homemade pickles, seasonal products, appetizers, and a plate of ravioli, reminiscent of what farmers would eat after a long day in the vineyards. This meal, accompanied by local wines like Nizza DOCG, offers a rustic yet authentic experience shared with a dedicated local family.
A trip to Italy is built upon small moments that linger in your memory: watching people, strolls through vineyards, and enjoying a book at the hotel spa with views of rolling hills.
This afternoon, you can relax at the hotel at your own pace, absorbing the serene atmosphere of the Italian countryside before embarking on the next food and wine tour in Piedmont.
From a rustic hunter’s farmhouse to a stylish Michelin-star restaurant in the area, where five-star service complements a multi-course tasting menu*** of at least five dishes.
*** Wine is not included at the Michelin-star restaurant. Each guest can choose a complete wine pairing or just a glass based on their mood for the evening.
Day 5 – Turin's Culinary Roots, Piedmont’s Capital
Meals included: breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Turin
After breakfast, it’s time to check out. Hop aboard our luxury van or minibus for a scenic drive from the Langhe Hills to the lively city of Turin, which served as Italy’s capital in 1861 and is now the capital of Piedmont. The journey takes just over an hour, with our first stop at a luxury hotel in the city center, where guests can leave their luggage in secure storage (check in after lunch).
This hotel, known for its timeless elegance and well-appointed rooms, offers one of the most extensive breakfast buffets in the city, making it the perfect place to spend our final night on the Food and Wine Tour in Piedmont.
Guided by a local expert, we invite you on an intimate walking tour through the heart of Turin. Our journey weaves through grand piazzas, elegant covered galleries, and the quiet, hidden corners that most travelers miss.
Our mission is to provide a deep understanding of Piedmont’s culinary roots and the profound impact the House of Savoy has had on both the cityscape and the palate.
Historic Cafés and Vermouth Experience
The final destination is one of Turin’s most iconic historic cafés, adorned with precious wooden fixtures and original furniture.
We top off our tour with a guided tasting of different kinds of vermouth paired with fresh tramezzini, invented in the city, and a traditional hot course.
Before you say goodbye, our guide will help with check-in at the hotel and offer suggestions for your last afternoon in Turin. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own one of the museums, such as the Royal Palace or the Egyptian Museum, and celebrate the end of our Food and Wine Tour in Piedmont with a dinner on your own, whether it’s the best pizza in town or fine dining.

"Our trip with Tour Guide Fannie and the other travelers was most enjoyable, especially since we had never been to Italy. Some of the other tourists had been to Italy, including some who had traveled previously with Meet Piemonte. They toured with other guides, so they helped enrich our experiences while in Tuscany and augmented the information presented by our guide. The lodging at Relais Monvi was outstanding, while the Grand Sitea in Turin was very acceptable especially since the location was in very close proximity to many of the sites we visited, with and without our guide. We were able to taste many of the fine wines from this region and really enjoyed the Barolo and Barbaresco varieties. Side trips to a chocolate-making factory and cheese aging facility were also interesting along with tastings of their products. Group members all participated in making: cookies from hazelnuts and chocolate; and made pasta and flan; then enjoyed the fruits of our labor at our host's kitchen and dining area. Though most of the group were able to trudge through the woods with a truffle hunter and his dog in Monta, we were unable to participate as terrain was too muddy and steep for us to safely descend the first hill. But we enjoyed viewing the church and various shrines while waiting for our "hunting" group. Then we all enjoyed a homemade lunch at hunter's home. All dinners were very enjoyable with excellent food and wines along with conversations with our fellow tourists. The bus we rode the majrity of the time was very comfortable and was able to handle all of the luggage from 14 guests including ourselves, on the trip to Turin. Turin was very interesting, including our trip up the Mole Antonelliana with its spectacular views of the city and the Alps foothills (too cloudy to see the actual Alps that day,) The local tour guide showed us many royal palaces, churches and Roman ruins to enhance our understanding of how Turin evolved over time."

"We aren't a tour family (nor are we review people), but our trip with Marco and Meet Piemonte this November made us into both. We knew we wanted to visit the region over Thanksgiving to enjoy the food, wine, and landscape during truffle season, but doing so meant starting research from scratch. Finding Meet Piemonte and working with Marco meant we not only eliminated planning time and day-to-day logistics stress, but we got an experience far more rich than anything hours of independent time could have produced. Marco's personal knowledge and in depth research of family owned food producers, refiners, and purveyors meant we not only had a seamless, stress-free experience, but that we got to enjoy the region in ways we would have never figured out on our own."

"It was wonderful. The food and wine were excellent, but what I enjoyed most was the scenery: the rolling hills, beautiful landscapes, old towns, and castles. I really had a great time."

"Such great planning on the part of this team made our trip incredibly relaxed and very interesting. A good mix of activities, with just the right amount of down time, perfect transports and amazing accommodations. Great communication before and during the trip. Couldn’t be happier."

Why is Vermouth so Iconic in Turin
Vermouth is a type of fortified and aromatized wine, traditionally produced in Turin. It is made by enhancing a base wine with a neutral spirit to increase its alcohol content (fortification), and infusing it with various herbs, spices, or roots, resulting in a complex and distinctive flavor profile.
Initially developed for medicinal use, vermouth has since become a foundational component in mixology. It is also enjoyed on its own, served chilled or over ice.
Dry vermouth is typically pale in color, with a crisp, herbal character and minimal sweetness. It is most commonly used in cocktails such as the Martini. The sweet vermouth is generally darker in color, with a richer, more robust flavor and noticeable sweetness. It is a key ingredient in classic cocktails like the Manhattan and the Negroni.

"This trip was everything I had hoped it would be. I traveled from the city to the lake, to the mountains, and to the Mediterranean. The tour was full of activities that were so much fun. The group walked and shopped, tasted chocolate, had a cooking class, ate at a Michelin star restaurant, swam in the sea. toasted one another with fabulous local wines, and much much more. If you want to get a great tour of these regions of Italy, this is the tour of tours! Book it now!!!!!! I have to applaud the trip leader, Marco Scaglione, for an outstanding job of being leader, tour guide, and friend. He was so professional and handled everything with ease, even when there was a "hiccup" and the weather didn't cooperate one day. He quickly found a replacement activity that was magnificent. I highly recommend Marco and Meet Piemonte."

"Traveling with Meet Piemonte on their small group tour of Sicily and Taormina was an absolutely delightful and enriching experience. One of the stand-out highlights in Sicily was our visit to a local olive farm. We learned firsthand about traditional olive oil production, walked among ancient groves, and sampled fresh oils paired with regional delicacies. The tour’s inclusion of several small, family-run wineries was a true treat for wine lovers. Exploring the salt pans was another unique highlight. In Palermo we enjoyed vibrant streets and shopping, fascinating architecture, and great street food. Our day trip to Farvignana island was a fascinating experience. The Meet Piemonte tour manager, Clarissa, was fantastic, and the guides on our excursions were outstanding. Transportation was comfortable, accommodations were fantastic, and every meal showcased Sicilian flavors. The balance of guided excursions and free time allowed us to explore independently while benefiting from expert recommendations. I highly recommend Meet Piemonte’s small group tours to anyone eager to experience Sicily, or any other Italian location."

"This is our second tour with Marco. Our first tour was northern Italy, and we thought nothing could compare. Well, our tour to the Amalfi Coast was just as spectacular. Everything including the hotel with private terraces overlooking the Mediterranean in Positano, the many private tours, the private boats to and around Capri, the cooking class and all the food were amazing. Marco is very accommodating; he always goes out of his way to ensure everyone is having the trip of a lifetime. Already thinking about where we want to go on our third tour with Meet Piemonte!"
